Case Study

Conversion, North Devon Coast
Class Q Conversion of a Redundant Building

This was an office favourite – we love an unusual project. A concrete water tower structure in an amazing position on the North Devon coast.

We had to go through a 2-stage planning process to secure a Class Q conversion, then a further operational development application to add the windows and exterior cladding.

The technical design was challenging and included having the building CAT scanned to locate all the reinforcing in the concrete, and working out window openings on the basis of that information.

Acoustics also had to be considered in the development of the design along with other technical challenges relating to the concrete shell of the building.

The project was delivered by a self-builder who developed the property as a home for himself.
